Workers in the Vineyard

20:1 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner 2  who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 20:2 And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, 3  he sent them into his vineyard. 20:3 When it was about nine o’clock in the morning, 4  he went out again and saw others standing around in the marketplace without work. 20:4 He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and I will give you whatever is right.’ 20:5 So they went. When 5  he went out again about noon and three o’clock that afternoon, 6  he did the same thing. 20:6 And about five o’clock that afternoon 7  he went out and found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why are you standing here all day without work?’ 20:7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go and work in the vineyard too.’ 20:8 When 8  it was evening 9  the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give the pay 10  starting with the last hired until the first.’ 20:9 When those hired about five o’clock came, each received a full day’s pay. 11  20:10 And when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each one also received the standard wage. 20:11 When 12  they received it, they began to complain 13  against the landowner, 20:12 saying, ‘These last fellows worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who bore the hardship and burning heat of the day.’ 20:13 And the landowner 14  replied to one of them, 15  ‘Friend, I am not treating you unfairly. Didn’t you agree with me to work for the standard wage? 16  20:14 Take what is yours and go. I 17  want to give to this last man 18  the same as I gave to you. 20:15 Am I not 19  permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 20  20:16 So the last will be first, and the first last.”

The Judgment

25:31 “When 21  the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 25:32 All 22  the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate people one from another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 25:33 He 23  will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 25:34 Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 25:36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 25:37 Then the righteous will answer him, 24  ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 25:38 When 25  did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you? 25:39 When 26  did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 25:40 And the king will answer them, 27  ‘I tell you the truth, 28  just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters 29  of mine, you did it for me.’

25:41 “Then he will say 30  to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels! 25:42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink. 25:43 I was a stranger and you did not receive me as a guest, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 25:44 Then they too will answer, 31  ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not give you whatever you needed?’ 25:45 Then he will answer them, 32  ‘I tell you the truth, 33  just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’ 25:46 And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

[16:27]  1 sn An allusion to Pss 28:4; 62:12; cf. Prov 24:12.

[20:1]  2 sn The term landowner here refers to the owner and manager of a household.

[20:2]  3 tn Grk “agreeing with the workers for a denarius a day.”

[20:2]  sn The standard wage was a denarius a day. The denarius was a silver coin worth about a day’s wage for a laborer in Palestine in the 1st century.

[20:3]  4 tn Grk “about the third hour.”

[20:5]  5 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[20:5]  6 tn Grk “he went out again about the sixth and ninth hour.”

[20:6]  7 tn Grk “about the eleventh hour.”

[20:8]  8 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[20:8]  9 sn That is, six o’clock in the evening, the hour to pay day laborers. See Lev 19:13b.

[20:8]  10 tc ‡ Most witnesses (including B D W Θ Ë1,13 33vid Ï latt sy) have αὐτοῖς (autois, “to them”) after ἀπόδος (apodos, “give the pay”), but this seems to be a motivated reading, clarifying the indirect object. The omission is supported by א C L Z 085 Or. Nevertheless, NA27 includes the pronoun on the basis of the greater external attestation.

[20:9]  11 tn Grk “each received a denarius.” See the note on the phrase “standard wage” in v. 2.

[20:11]  12 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[20:11]  13 tn The imperfect verb ἐγόγγυζον (egonguzon) has been translated ingressively.

[20:13]  14 tn Grk “he”; the referent (the landowner) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:13]  15 tn Grk “And answering, he said to one of them.” This construction is somewhat redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation.

[20:13]  16 tn Grk “for a denarius a day.”

[20:14]  17 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[20:14]  18 tn Grk “this last one,” translated as “this last man” because field laborers in 1st century Palestine were men.

[20:15]  19 tc ‡ Before οὐκ (ouk, “[am I] not”) a number of significant witnesses read (h, “or”; e.g., א C W 085 Ë1,13 33 and most others). Although in later Greek the οι in σοι (oi in soi) – the last word of v. 14 – would have been pronounced like , since is lacking in early mss (B D; among later witnesses, note L Z Θ 700) and since mss were probably copied predominantly by sight rather than by sound, even into the later centuries, the omission of cannot be accounted for as easily. Thus the shorter reading is most likely original. NA27 includes the word in brackets, indicating doubts as to its authenticity.

[20:15]  20 tn Grk “Is your eye evil because I am good?”

[25:31]  21 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[25:32]  22 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:33]  23 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:37]  24 tn Grk “answer him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:38]  25 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[25:39]  26 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[25:40]  27 tn Grk “answering, the king will say to them.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

[25:40]  28 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[25:40]  29 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited). In this context Jesus is ultimately speaking of his “followers” (whether men or women, adults or children), but the familial connotation of “brothers and sisters” is also important to retain here.

[25:41]  30 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:44]  31 tn Grk “Then they will answer, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:45]  32 tn Grk “answer them, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:45]  33 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”
